Spanish grammar

Ser vs estar

Two verbs for “to be”—permanent vs temporary is only the start.

Ser — identity and essence

Use ser for what something is: profession, nationality, personality traits, time, and events.

  • Soy profesor. (I am a teacher.)
  • Es lunes. (It is Monday.)
  • La fiesta es en mi casa. (The party is at my house.)

Estar — state and location

Use estar for conditions, emotions, locations, and progressive actions.

  • Estoy cansado. (I am tired.)
  • ¿Dónde está el baño? (Where is the bathroom?)
  • Estamos estudiando. (We are studying.)

Drill both with music
