Spanish grammar
Preterite vs imperfect
Past tense in Spanish splits into two moods—master both for real storytelling.
Preterite — done and dusted
Completed actions, sequences, and sudden events.
- Ayer comí pizza. (Yesterday I ate pizza.)
- De repente, empezó a llover. (Suddenly it started to rain.)
Imperfect — background and habit
Ongoing past, descriptions, age, time, and habitual actions.
- Cuando era niño, jugaba afuera. (When I was a kid, I played outside.)
- Mientras cocinaba, sonó el teléfono. (While I was cooking, the phone rang.)
Practice both on separate tracks
